STEUBENVILLE - It was a successful night Thursday for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who defeated the Cleveland Indians 3-2 during the final game of the interleague series, and for the participants of the inaugural Steubenville-Weirton Pirates Community Night at PNC Park.

The Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times, along with the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, were among the sponsors of the event. Of the 30,120 in attendance, there were 411 people representing the Ohio Valley.

Those who purchased tickets to attend the community event and sit in the all-you-can-eat section got more than they bargained for, with door prizes drawn at the end of each inning, free Pirates T-shirts and the opportunity to mingle with area residents.

"We're here to have a great time," said Linda McGlone of Wintersville. "It's a good bargain."

For the price of , participants who purchased tickets early were able to ride up to the game in one of four packed charter buses, sit in the all-you-can-eat section and were eligible to win prizes.

STEUBENVILLE - By the time state Sen. Jason Wilson, D-Columbiana, returned to his statehouse office late Wednesday he found 175 voicemails on his answering machine.

"The callers are concerned about multiple issues, but I think the public libraries have done an excellent job telling members and supporters to contact legislators," Wilson observed.

Wilson acknowledged Gov. Ted Strickland's attempt to cut .4 billion from the state's budget will mean difficult choices in the next several days.

"There is little joy in looking at these issues and the proposed budget cuts. I know library funding is down because their monies come from a percentage of the overall state revenue and that revenue is also down. So the Legislature is looking at new funding cuts in addition to the 20 percent reduction the libraries have already seen," said Wilson.

"Other detrimental moves we are looking at are cuts for the Agricultural Research and Development Center, the career prep tech programs, drug and alcohol addition programs and Medicare issues as well as cuts to our veterans services" noted Wilson.

"What I am keenly disappointed in is the lack of significant cuts in rehabilitation and corrections funding. Basically the folks who have done wrong aren't being asked to sacrifice in any way," Wilson said.
